Short description:
SMART is a network for different movements and organizations in Sweden and some other countries that work with the “Contract Concept”, a successful way to prevent or delay the onset of tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs. These are school-based programmes that target youth in the age from 10 to 16 years.

The prevention programmes are maintained by positive reinforcement and individual contracts with youth in local communities, we call them collectively the Contract Concept. The network SMART today represents 31000 young members from around 80 communities in Sweden.
By using the Contract Concept, many of the communities have succeeded in cutting down use of tobacco and/or alcohol amongst teenagers by half. This will in a longer perspective lead to fewer alcoholics and drug addicts, due to the connections between early onsets and later abuse and addiction.

SMART’s mission is to spread the Contract Concept to as many communities as possible, by giving support for free in different ways, in order to help more youngsters and families. We also arrange Nordic Prevention Conferences almost every year to spread new scientific knowledge, give good examples and give a possibility to exchange advice of different kinds.

Other countries that are working with the method and where we have been involved in spreading the Contract Concept and educated tutors for the projects are Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Belarus. In Finland, Denmark and especially Norway the method is very well spread. Representatives from all these countries have been taking part in different conferences organized by us, some have also invited us to give lectures during their own conferences.
