Hand over Ceremony of 10 Rugged Terrain Vehicles to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police

Peshawar - 2 December 2014, UNODC continues to work in partnership with Government of Pakistan to improve the technical capacity of its law enforcement agencies in areas of illicit trafficking and border management, criminal justice system and drug demand reduction with focus on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Police.

This important initiative of support to KPK police, by handing over 10 Rugged terrain vehicles to one of the most important law enforcement agencies in Pakistan that stands as a vanguard, in fighting to protect society from those who seek to undermine the rule of law through their criminal activities, as highlighted by the ultimate sacrifice of its courageous personnel who have laid down their lives in the line of duty and to whom we pay our respect and tribute today.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Country Representative Mr. Cesar Guedes said "One of the serious challenges to the security and health of the nation is posed by drug trafficking networks and with the province of KPK bordering Afghanistan which produces 90% of the world's opiates, places it in a uniquely vulnerable position".
UNODC in recognition of this phenomena feels that all agencies involved in the combatting of the scourge of drug trafficking whether through the specific counter narcotics mandate vested in them or through a de facto position of dealing with the effects of drug trafficking in others spheres of criminality, should be empowered through adequate resources.
UNODC will continue its efforts and share commitment for our long-term support with Khyber Paktunkhwa Police. This was made possible with the funding of Canada and Denmark.
