On 15 March 2023, the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan organized in Vienna a side event on the margins of the 66th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs to present the “Review of the Situation on Narcotic Drugs in the Republic of Tajikistan for 2022”.
The event brought together representatives from UNODC, the Drug Control Agency under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the diplomatic corps and international organizations accredited in Austria, the Embassy of Tajikistan in Austria, UNOV, UNAIDS, CSTO, CARICC, SCO, and other relevant parties.
Highlighting Tajikistan’s crucial role in countering drug trafficking, especially given its shared border with Afghanistan, UNODC Regional Representative for Central Asia Ashita Mittal emphasized the country’s active contribution to regional efforts. “Tajikistan is a key partner in promoting drug control cooperation,” said Ms. Mittal, who moderated the event. “The review of the country’s drug situation in 2022 serves as a valuable tool for information and knowledge exchange within the region. We encourage our partners to continue their efforts in developing comprehensive information and analysis materials.”
Major General of Justice Habibullo Vohidzoda, Director of the Drug Control Agency, presented the annual drug situation review for 2022, which detailed Tajikistan’s policy on countering drug trafficking, key trends in the drug situation both domestically and regionally, and the counternarcotics activities of law enforcement agencies, ministries, and departments. The review also outlined measures for controlling the licit movement of narcotic drugs, preventing drug abuse, strengthening border control, implementing joint counternarcotics activities with other states, and advancing counternarcotics programmes and international cooperation.
Habibullo Vohidzoda, emphasizing the transboundary nature of drug trafficking and smuggling, stressed the critical need for strengthened state borders. He urged donor countries and international organizations to provide financial, technical, and logistical support to the authorized agencies of the Republic of Tajikistan in strengthening the Tajik-Afghan border, given the threats originating from Afghanistan.
The presentation was followed by an exchange of views and a question-and-answer session.
