Each bar of soap transcends its practical purpose, its packaging bears messages on crime prevention and protection from violence. “Prevention and protection are made by your own hands”, such messaging turns the soaps into a vehicle for community education and engagement, aiming to help cultivate a safer environment for all.
Shortly after the launch of the youth initiative, turmoil struck. The Gaza war began which had a contagion impact on Lebanon resulting in 481 deaths, 98,750 people displaced (UNOCHA), and 1,700 hectares of agricultural land damaged (National Council for Scientific Research). The olive trees*, too, were not spared from the ravages of war; the once-thriving groves saw more than 117 hectares** destroyed. This destruction not only jeopardized the local economy and identity but also added to the multifaceted challenges faced by the youth. “Trying to deal with the tough situation of uncertainty, fear, and displacement due to the daily bombing was a challenge.” they shared. It was challenging to work under such extreme stress, but they remained undeterred and were able to organize a small exhibition, the youth proudly commented “We sold most of our soap”. The proceeds from these soaps are reinvested by the youth-led initiative for crime prevention awareness sessions in their community and neighboring villages, amplifying its impact.
This initiative is a powerful example of how communities can come together to turn adversity into strength. Each basket of soap represents a step towards reinforcing youth’s commitment to both their heritage and their future, and each bar of soap now shines with a glimmer of hope.
The youth-led initiative mentioned above, under the name “Together We Rise”, is within the framework of the #Participate4impact regional competition, supported by the regional project “Youth4Impact”, which is implemented in 6 MENA countries; namely Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Lebanon, Sudan, and Palestine. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and aims at supporting young men and women, boys and girls, including the most vulnerable and at-risk youth, to gain resilience against the risks of drugs, crime and violence and to be empowered to face life’s challenges.
