Identification of Child Sexual Exploitation Victims

United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime Guatemala (UNODC) along with the International Criminal Police (Interpol) facilitated a basic training for victim identification for the Cybercrime Unit of the National Civil Police of Guatemala. The training was held on the 26 th and 27 th of July 2017 in the framework of the project "Strengthening Capacity to Prevent and Combat Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) in Central America".

The training was conducted by Interpol intelligence officers from Buenos Aires and Lyon, Gabriela Chamorro Concha and Julián Millán Platero. The objective of the workshop was to strengthen the investigators´ capacities of the Cybercrime Unit to identify victims of child sexual abuse and exploitation which are facilitated through information and communication technologies.

The activity will bring benefits in the analysis of images and videos of sexual crimes against minors, which will expand the investigator´s ability to find indications to locate and identify aggressors as well as the victims of online sexual exploitation. Interpol, through its Crimes against Children Unit, has promoted a victim-centered approach among member countries in the investigation of child abuse.

We are grateful to our sponsor, the Canadian Embassy in Guatemala, for its generous financial support for the project "Strengthening the Capacity to Prevent and Combat Cybercrime and Internet Crimes against Children in Central America."
