National Authorities and Business Sector joint efforts to achieve Social Reintegration
In order to facilitate the labor and social reintegration of persons deprived of their liberty, the Ministry of Government through the Directorate General Prisons (DGSP), with the support of the SECOPA Project (implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, with the financial support of the European Union) organized a dialogue with the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama.
The event was attended by 23 members of the Panamanian private sector. During this activity, participants discussed potential mechanisms to create workplaces for former prisoners who have participated and successfully completed reinsertion programs.
DGSP authorities presented to business sector the main reintegration programs carried out in prison centers around the country, such as Eco-Sólidos (waste management program), the University Annex located at the Women's Rehabilitation Center (CEFERE) and Renacer Prison Center, Mi Voz para tus ojos (audio-books program), Integrarte (prison brand program), and the Kairo Company program.
On the other hand, prison authorities shared the catalog of products elaborated inside prison workshops, in order to identify manufacture opportunities of products that may be of interest for the business sector or that may be commercialized in the local market.
DGSP and the Chamber of Commerce agreed upon a mechanism to identify potential alternatives that allowed the suitable labor and social reintegration of persons deprived of liberty and committed to work jointly to benefit public safety.
