New headquarters of the Panamanian prison training academy is inaugurated

The new Headquarters of the Prison Training Academy (AFP) was inaugurated with the presence of the President of the Republic of Panama, the Minister of Government, prison authorities, representatives of the local Government, the Representative of UNODC-ROPAN and the prison team, at the locality of the Roble, province of Coclé.

The inauguration of the new facilities will enable a better implementation of the prison career law, which was passed on September 14 th 2016, as it will facilitate an adequate and specialized training of prison staff.

The prison career law will professionalize the prison personnel, as it will be possible to count on a body of prison officials duly hierarchized and disciplined.

The President of the Republic, the Minister of Government and the Director of the Prison Training Academy thanked UNODC for the support provided to the AFP through the projects it implements with the financial support of the US Embassy and the European Union (SECOPA), and for the technical assistance provided in all aspects of the prison reform.

Since 2010, UNODC has supported the Panamanian state, which has allowed significant progress to be made, including the reopening of the Prison Training Academy and now the inauguration of its new headquarters.

The new headquarters of the AFP have the capacity to train 150 men and women prison guards. The infrastructure has 5 buildings, distributed in dormitories (men and women), academic area with classrooms, laboratories, a study center, library, administrative area, dining area and kitchen.

It is built on an area of ​​more than 27 hectares that the Ministry of Education gave to the Ministry of Government for its administration and use in 2013.

For the installation of this Academy, UNODC, with the financial support of the US Embassy and the European Union, has contributed with IT equipment, study materials, trainings, furniture for classrooms and dormitories, vehicles, among others things.
