Prevention of smuggling and corruption in Central America

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in close collaboration with the British Embassy of Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras and El Salvador conducted the seminar to prevent smuggling and corruption in each country.

These events had the participation of over 200 member of the Custom Authorities, Port Authorities, Prosecutor's Offices, Private Companies attended the events held in each of the aforementioned countries.

The initiative provided an opportunity to discuss the dimensions of illicit trade, taking into account its repercussions on the economy, society and the citizens. Moreover, the participants exchanged valuable experiences with national experts from the public and private sector as well as with British specialist and UNODC experts in various topic as the vulnerabilities of legal systems, the drafting and application process of the policies and techniques designed to combat smuggling and corruption.

This regional initiative will conclude with a Seminar in Guatemala on April 1 st with the attendance of 50 Guatemalan civil servants.
