Regional Webinar "Challenges and measures to prevent and combat corruption"

Panama, October 12, 2021. The importance of integrity and transparency in public administration is fundamental to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. However, the threat of corruption remains a key challenge in the LAC region and is exacerbated by the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Corruption undermines democratic institutions, hinders social and economic development, and contributes to government instability. It undermines peace and security, has a negative impact on human rights, the rule of law and gender equality, and is a driver of conflict and violence.

Tackling corruption in light of the current critical economic situation requires fair public management, an approach aimed at ensuring that all public spending maximizes sustainable value for money, with transparency and efficiency, with social and environmental impact on current and future communities and generations, and improved quality in public service delivery and governance.

In this context, the United Nations Thematic Coalition on Governance and Institutions organized the regional webinar "Challenges and measures to prevent and combat corruption and promote fair and equitable public management as key components of peaceful, just and inclusive societies".

The speakers at this seminar were José Vila del Castillo, UNODC Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean; Fabrizio Feliciani, UNOPS Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean; Linda Maguire, Deputy Regional Director, UNDP Deputy Assistant Administrator for Latin America and the Caribbean and Andrés Salazar Van Epp, Team Leader for Central America of the Department of Political Affairs and Peacebuilding (DPPA-DPO).

The topics addressed at the seminar were: Political context of corruption in Latin America; overview of the UN General Assembly Special Session against Corruption and its implications for Latin America; fair public management: the other side of the coin of the fight against corruption and perceptions of governance and views on corruption in Latin America: an overview.
