University forum "Voices for Peace" held in El Salvador

San Salvador, September 21, 2022. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in coordination with the agencies, funds and programs of the United Nations System in El Salvador organized the University Forum “Voices for Peace”, as part of the commemoration of the International Day of Peace observed every September 21.
200 students attended the forum from universities Francisco Gavidia, Universidad Politécnica, Universidad de El Salvador, Universidad Evangélica, Universidad Andrés Bello, Universidad Gerardo Barrios, Universidad Modular Abierta, Universidad Salvadoreña Alberto Masferrer, Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas, and Universidad Dr. José Matías Delgado.
United Nations experts and academics shared their perspectives on the culture of peace, through the development of three panels: 1-Youth generating tools for the promotion of peace; 2-Peacebuilding with a gender approach; 3-Construction of spaces for coexistence and tolerance.
UNODC experts contributed to the third panel, with the participation of Alvina Mangandi as moderator and Jordi Martín, crime prevention specialist, who addressed cybercrime prevention and digital citizenship.
One of the speakers at the forum, Natalia Rivera Bajaña, project coordinator of the Dr. José Matías Delgado University emphasized that, from her academic role, she would work for the respect of people to generate environments of coexistence and tolerance: “In the university it´s important to generate more inclusion projects, respect for diversity, education for peace. These types of forums help us to realize that there are more of us who want peace.”
On the other hand, Alex Serrano, attendee to the forum, and Social Projection chief of the Faculty of Jurisprudence and Social Sciences of the Salvadoran University Alberto Masferrer, highlighted that “the culture of peace strengthens attitudes towards a healthy coexistence, with tolerance, equality and respect among all human beings.”
On September 21, the United Nations commemorates the "International Day of Peace" under the theme for this year “End racism. Build peace", and invites states, organizations, academia, private sector, civil society to promote the culture of peace, equality and human rights.
