UNODC and ICMEC Organized Regional Conference "Together for a Protected Childhood. Combating Technology-Facilitated Child Sexual Abuse On-line"

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in collaboration with the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (ICMEC), held on November 9, 2016, in Guatemala City, Guatemala, the Regional Conference "Together for a Protected Childhood. Combating Technology- Facilitated Child Sexual Abuse On-line". The Regional Conference was attended by national authorities of Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panamá and Dominican Republic, social network service providers (Facebook, Microsoft and Google), international experts and civil society organizations dedicated to countering on-line child sexual abuse and exploitation.

The aim of the Regional Conference was to share and to learn best practices and perspectives on cybercrime prevention matters. The Regional Conference was attended by Ms. María Capelo, Manager for Public Policy and Government Relations for Central America and the Caribbean of Google, Mr. Marlon Fetzner, Legal and Corporate Affairs Director at Microsoft, and Jason Barry, Trust and Security Manager for Facebook.

The opening ceremony of the Regional Conference was attended by Ms. Thelma Aldana, Guatemala Attorney-General, Mr. Walter Girón, Deputy Minister of Technology of the Ministry of the Interior, Ms. Deborah Chatsis, Canada Ambassador in Guatemala, Ms. Claudia Ordoñez, Secretary of Guatemala Secretariat Against Sexual Violence, Exploitation and Trafficking in Persons, Commissioner Nery Ramos y Ramos, General Director of Guatemala National Civil Police, Ms. Delia Dávila, Magistrate of Guatemala Supreme Court of Justice, Commissioner Juan Carlos Martínez Marín, Deputy Director of Investigations El Salvador National Civil Police of El Salvador,  Ms. Pilar Ramirez, Legal Adviser and Project Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean of the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (ICMEC),  and Mr. Olivier Inizan, UNODC Deputy Regional Representative for Central America and the Caribbean.

In the opening ceremony, experts highlighted the importance of implementing public policies and national and international legal frameworks for prosecuting and sanctioning every form of violence, abuse and exploitation against children and adolescents, especially in cyberspace. The importance of continued multiagency coordination to provide a more effective response for children and adolescents victims of online crime was also discussed.

The Regional Conference generously funded by the Government of Canada under the project "Strengthening the Capacity to Prevent and Combat Cybercrime and Internet Crimes against Children (ICAC) in Central America", implemented by the UNODC Global Programme on Cybercrime in Guatemala.
