UNODC Blue Heart Campaign Delivered the Workshop "Awareness Raising for Professional Communicators on Trafficking in Persons"
San Salvador, July 14, 2017. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and El Salvador National Council against Trafficking in Persons, in the framework of UNODC Blue Heart Campaing delivered the workshop "Awareness Raising for Professional Communicators on Trafficking in Persons". This workshop was delivered to 20 communicators from different governmental and non-governmental institutions.
The workshop goal was to sensitize and inform representatives of communication areas of different governmental and non-governmental institutions, about the importance of preventing and combating trafficking in persons, as well as introduce them to UNODC Blue Heart Campaign. Additionally, in this workshop it was evaluated different ways to include the Blue Heart Campaign into the day-to-day activities of each institution.
The workshop was developed by Ms. Lourdes Gutiérrez, UNODC Regional Project Coordinator on Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants. Mrs. Gutiérrez delivered a presentation on the subject of trafficking in persons, and its main difference with smuggling of migrants. In this presentation, it was highlighted the importance of preventing trafficking in persons and emphasized some of the prevention activities developed in different countries in the context of the Blue Heart Campaign. Additionally, Mr. Miguel Palomino, UNODC Communications Consultant and creator of the Blue Heart Campaign explained in detail the Eleven Campaign Pact's Principles.
Trafficking in Persons is a global problem and constitutes one of the most heinous criminal manifestations today. It is the third source of income for transnational organized crime and is closely linked to other offenses such as kidnapping, extortion, money laundering, corruption, drug trafficking and smuggling of migrants.
The Blue Heart Campaign seeks to raise awareness on trafficking in persons matters, coordinate mechanism to deal with this crime effectively, build citizen alert mechanisms to reduce the vulnerability of potential victims, encourage massive public participation on spaces of opinion regarding citizens' participation role in the eradication of this crime and strengthen citizens' confidence to denounce and / or collaborate with the authorities.
In this sense the Blue Heart Campaign against Trafficking in Persons effectively contributes in raising awareness on the plight of victims and building political support in the fight against criminals networks behind trafficking in persons. The Blue Heart Campaign has been adopted by several countries all over the world.
This workshop was delivered thanks to the financial resources generously provided by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the Embassy of the United States in El Salvador through the project "Preventing and Fighting against Smuggling of Migrants and Trafficking in Persons in El Salvador", which is being implemented by UNODC.
