UNODC conducts National Workshops on Access to Controlled Substances for Medical Purposes in Belize and Costa Rica

 

San José, June 21st, 2019. In the framework of the UNODC Global Program on Access to Controlled Substances for Medical Purposes, on June 10 and 11, with the support of the Ministry of Health and the National Drug Abuse Control Council of the Republic of Belize, UNODC conducted the workshop on Rational Use of Controlled Drugs in Belize City, addressed to participants of the Ministry of Health, regulatory systems, Pharmacy Association, Customs and the National Drug Council.

In the same way, with the support of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Costa Rica, the workshop on the rational use of controlled drugs was held on June 13 and 14 in the City of San Jose, Costa Rica. This event included the participation of health professionals from the Ministry of Health, Institute on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Medicine of the University of Costa Rica, College of Pharmacists and the Costa Rican Institute on Drugs, among others.

These national workshops are a continuation of the work carried out by the countries in the Central American workshop on access to medicines carried out in Panama last March.

In both countries, the Global Program Coordinator, Mrs. Elizabeth Mattfeld, led the workshop. The main topics were:

• International Perspectives and resources.

• Introduction to the UNODC Guide on the rational use of controlled medicines.

• Supply Chain

• Building a system. Sensitive areas

In addition, workshops were held for the analysis of the central areas of the system and its strengthening. For this purpose, the UNODC Guide on the rational use of controlled medicines was used.
