UNODC conducts training workshop on the Main Components of the Prison Reform
In the framework of the PANZ59 Project "Consolidating prison reform improvements in Panama", with the support of the US Embassy in Panama, and the SECOPA Project, implemented by UNODC with the financial support of the European Union, UNODC, the Prison Training Academy and the Ministry of Government held a training workshop titled "Updates on the Main Components of the Prison Reform in Panama" for Prison Directors and Heads of Departments of the General Office of the Prison System (DGSP).
The event took place on March 16 and 17, 2017 in Panama City and was inaugurated by the General Director of the Prison System, Mr. Etéreo Armando Medina, the Director of the Prison Training Academy, Ms. Gisell Castillo, and the Coordinator of UNODC Prison Reform Team, Ms. María Noel Rodriguez. The workshop has also included the participation of the Director of the Regional Office for Latin America of the Association for the Prevention of Torture, Ms. Audrey Olivier Muralt.
Among topics covered are the international law for the prevention of torture, the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture, the Digital Communication Strategy of the DGSP, the Handbook on the Organizational Structure and Functions of the DGSP, progress on the regulation of the Prison Career, progress on the Prison Management Information System (SIP) and the recently enacted Law 4 of 2017.
During the workshop, UNODC also held a presentation on the achievements of the SECOPA Project. In this context, the prison staff evaluated the activities carried out within the framework of this Project and indicated the measures that will be adopted at the individual and institutional levels to give sustainability to the Project and ensure its impact.
