UNODC organizes internship in the prisons of the Republic of Panama

From 26 to 30 September 2016, under the UNODC PANZ59 Project "Consolidating prison reform improvements in Panama", with the support of the US Embassy in Panama, Directors of prisons and Heads of Departments of the General Office of the Prison System visited all prisons in the provinces of Panama, Western Panama and Colon to exchange good hygiene and sanitation practices.

The directors of prisons made presentations on their prisons, including information on actual surface for prisoner (m2), quantity of drinking water and amount of showers and toilets, among other issues, taking into consideration the minimum standards set by international organizations.

In this context, participants also discussed the accommodation places, water supply and hygiene measures, maintenance of prison, preparation and distribution of food, waste management, and participation of prisoners in cleaning duties.

The second phase of the internship, in which the rest of the prisons will be visited, will be held from 14 to 19 November.
