UNODC strengthens reinsertion programs and capacities of prison staff

Under the PANZ59 Project "Consolidating prison reform improvements in Panama", with the support of the US Embassy in Panama, UNODC has donated two prefabricated classrooms to the Women's Rehabilitation Center (CEFERE) to extend the capacity of the University Annex.

The University Annex has now 5 classrooms in total to facilitate the study possibilities of women deprived of their freedom, contributing directly to their social reintegration. There are currently 63 women studying the various courses offered by the University of Panama, including Fashion Design, Bilingual Call Center Technician (callcenter), Bachelor in Community Development and Technician in Educational Informatics.

On the other hand, UNODC has made a formal delivery of 450 copies of the legislation on the prevention of torture to the authorities of the General Office of the Prison System, including a brief training about its content. In particular, the document compiles the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Torture and Law 6 of 22 February 2017. This publication is extremely important to strengthen the knowledge of prison staff in order to prevent prisoners from being subjected to torture, ill-treatment, cruel or degrading treatment.
