UNODC Strengthens the capabilities of El Salvador National Civil Police in the fight against crimes of trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants facilitated by ICTs
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in coordination with the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the U.S. Embassy in El Salvador and the Cyber Center Police Directorate of Colombia National Police delivered a series of mentorship sessions to different Units of the National of the National Civil Police of El Salvador.
The purpose of these mentorships sessions was to provide effective approaches and best practices to ensure a successful investigation of human trafficking and smuggling of migrants facilitated by information and communication technologies.
The first part of the mentorships sessions took place on June 19 to 23 June at the facilities of the SubDirectorate of Investigations of El Salvador National Civil Police. These sessions were directed to investigators of the following units: Specialized Unit against Trafficking in Persons and related Offenses; Unit of Cybercrime Investigations; Unit of Analysis and Treatment of Information; Unit of Operative Techniques and Fugitive Search Group; as well as investigators from several decentralized units.
The second part of the mentorships sessions were held from June 26 to 30 at the United States Embassy in El Salvador. These sessions were addressed to members of the Transnational Crime Investigation Unit. During these mentorships, the Colombian Police provided specialized advice in ongoing cases in areas involving: IP addresses, identification and individualization of profiles in social networks social networks (mainly Facebook), as well as preservation of information in social networks.
These mentorships were provided by UNODC thanks to the financial resources generously provided by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the Embassy of the United States in El Salvador, in the framework of the project "Preventing and Fighting against Smuggling of Migrants and Trafficking in Persons in El Salvador" implemented by UNODC. As well as UNODC broader efforts in the Global Programme on Cybercrime.
