UNODC Supports Fighting and Sanctioning Cybercrime in El Salvador
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Regional Office for Central America and the Caribbean in Panama (UNODC ROPAN), through the Programme Office for El Salvador (POSAL), in coordination with the School of Judicial Training and the Prosecution Training Academy developed the "Cybercrime and Digital Evidence" course, directed to judges, prosecutors and investigators. The course took place from February 8 to 10 in Antiguo Cuscatlán, San Salvador.
The course was attended by 17 penal judges, 14 prosecutors and 4 investigators of the Cybercrime Unit of the National Civil Police. In the opening ceremony participated Ms. Mónica Mendoza, UNODC Programme Office for El Salvador Chief, Mr. Aquiles Parada, Deputy Attorney General of El Salvador, Ms. María Zenaida Rivera, Director of the Prosecution Training Academy and Mr. Hugo Granadino Mejía, Acting Director of the School of Judicial Training.
The course was developed by Mr. Joshua James, expert on cybercrime investigation and digital forensic analysis. The course programme was focused on providing a basic level of knowledge and techniques applied to effectively investigating cybercrime and handling properly digital evidence.
In closing ceremony participated Mrs. Nayelly Loya, Deputy for the UNODC Programme Office for El Salvador, Ms. María Zenaida Rivera, Director of the Prosecution Training Academy, Mr. José Hugo Granadino Mejía, Acting Director of the School of Judicial Training and Mr. Juan David Vásquez Laínez, Chief of the Cybercrime Unit of the National Civil Police.
The course was developed thanks to the financial resources provided by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the Embassy of the United States in El Salvador under the project "Strengthening of the capacities of El Salvador National Police to effectively identify and
investigate cybercrime cases".
