UNODC Supports the Salvadoran National Civil Police to Counter Current Challenges in Cybercrime

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Regional Office for Central America and the Caribbean in Panama (UNODC ROPAN) through the Programme Office for El Salvador (POSAL) in coordination with the Salvadoran National Civil Police developed the "Practical course on cybercrime investigation and digital forensic analysis" directed to investigators and forensic examiners. The course took place from February 15 to 19, 2016 in Antiguo Cuscatlán, El Salvador.

The course was developed by Mr. Joshua James, international expert on cybercrime investigation and digital forensic analysis. The course was attended by 10 law enforcement officers from the PNC Cybercrime Unit, 2 forensic examiners from the PNC Cybercrime Unit, 7 forensic examiners from the PNC Division of Technical and Scientific Police, and 1 legal counselor from the PNC Subdirectorate of Investigations.

Cybercrime investigation and digital forensic analysis are areas in continuous evolution. The course was developed to address the challenges of currents trends in cybercrime and handling digital evidence, the sessions were focused on enhancing student's knowledge and practical skills in the areas of digital forensic analysis, live data forensics, disk acquisition, documentation and verification, data structures, networking, among others. 

The course was developed thanks to the financial resources provided by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the Embassy of the United States in El Salvador under the project "Strengthening of the capacities of El Salvador National Police to effectively identify and investigate cybercrime cases".
