Workshop on asset recovery and international cooperation in Haiti

Port-au-Prince, 10 September, 2019. United Nations Office Against Drugs and Crime for the Caribbean and Central America, in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice and Public Security ( Ministère de la Justice et de la Sécurité Publique, MJSP), and MINUJUSTH, delivered a workshop on asset recovery and international cooperation in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on 6 September.

In their opening remarks, the representatives of MINUJUSTH, UNODC and the MJSP focused on the national and international context in which the fight against corruption is being waged. About 67 participants including judges, prosecutors, lawyers and representatives of national anti-corruption institutions, such as the Anti-Corruption Unit, Central Financial Intelligence Unit, National Commission Anti-Drug (Seized property/assets Section) participated in the activity.

UNODC - ROPAN developed a presentation on mechanisms provided for by UNCAC relating to assets recovery and shared with participants two examples were civil society/justice and a State found a solution to address the voluntary or involuntary will obstacles recover assets.

The director of operations of Haitian anti-corruption Unit presented the Haitian institutions dealing with assets recovery as well as some legislations which could be used by judicial actors/representatives of institutions involved in this matter in the absence of a specific legislation.

Discussions with participants were very fruitful and appreciated.
