Workshops on Investigative Journalism

In Guatemala in the departments of Chiquimula, on March 3 and 4 and in Quetzaltenango, on March 10 and 11, workshops were held in Investigative Journalism, facilitated by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in the framework of the project "Institutional and Citizen Empowerment for the fight against impunity: an opportunity for Peace and the Rule of Law in Guatemala", thanks to the support of the Peace Building Fund-PB.

The workshops fulfilled one of the project's objectives: to strengthen national capacities to improve the fight against impunity with special emphasis on the improvement of civil society's social oversight capacities in cases of high impact. The workshops were led by the consultant Julie López, an expert in investigative journalism. Sixty (60) journalists from Alta Verapaz, Chiquimula, El Progreso, Guatemala, Huehuetenango, Puerto Barrios, Quetzaltenango, Sacatepéquez and Sololá, attended the workshops.

The following topics were developed in the workshops: investigative journalism, ideas to start a research, hypothesis, causes and effects, structure of reports, sources, organization of information, among others. Strengthening the capacities of journalists and the media in investigative journalism will strengthen the capacities of civil society in social oversight.
