Maputo (Mozambique), 15 August 2024 – The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Mozambique concluded another cycle of an intensive training course in Pemba, Cabo Delgado, from 6 to 15 August 2024.
This initiative aimed to equip officials from the country’s criminal justice system with critical tools and knowledge to effectively combat terrorism and its financing, in strict adherence to the principles of the tule of law and international human rights standards. The course is an essential part of Mozambique’s ongoing efforts to be removed from the Financial Action Task Force’s grey list.
Supported by the United States Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, this cycle provided specialized training to officials from the National Criminal Investigation Service, the Office of the Attorney General and its dedicated Central Office for Combating Organized and Transnational Crime, and the Supreme Court.
Participants reported significant advancements in their ability to investigate, prosecute, and adjudicate offences related to terrorism and its financing.
“Beneficiaries are now better equipped to navigate the complexities of terrorism financing and other key challenges, which often arise at critical stages of investigation and prosecution”, says the lead officer for UNODC counterterrorism projects in Mozambique.
“With the support from key international partners, UNODC will continue to carry out such mentoring programmes in the coming months, further increasing know-how within Mozambican institutions.”
The successful implementation of this course highlights the impact of coordinated and collaborative approaches in strengthening the nation’s criminal justice system.
UNODC works to build the capacity of national criminal justice systems to prevent and counter terrorism more efficiently through capacity-building workshops at the national, subregional and regional levels, sharing legislation expertise on implementing anti-terrorism legislation and other measures in compliance with the rule of law and international norms and standards on human rights, and promoting regional and international cooperation between Member States.
