SEOUL (Republic of Korea), 19 March 2009 - The objectives of the Expert Group Meeting on Electronic Evidence Gathering were: to identify and discuss the main legal and operational issues affecting the gathering and use of electronic surveillance in the investigation of serious and organized crime (with a focus on the interception of communications) as forensic evidence; to identify the challenges in conducting cross-border surveillance; to promote the exchange of experiences; and to obtain best practices on electronic evidence gathering.
The meeting was co-hosted by the Supreme Prosecution Office of Seoul and it was attended by experts and representatives of Australia, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. It was held at the Digital Forensic Centre of the Supreme Prosecution Office in Seoul. Participants were given demonstrations of some of the technology employed in the Centre thereby highlighting the importance of new technologies for investigating and countering organized crime.
The meeting represented an opportunity to share valuable insights into the approach of other jurisdictions to electronic evidence gathering and to foster greater cooperation in the future.
