BANGKOK (Thailand), 1 May 2009 - Following its initial announcement in Australia on World Health Day, April 7 2009, Australia's New International Development Strategy for HIV "Intensifying the Response: Halting the Spread of HIV" was launched in Asia today by Australia's Parliamentary Secretary for International Development, Mr. Bob McMullan. The Strategy, drafted by AusAID, will guide Australia in its commitment to achieving the United Nation's Millennium Development Goal of halting and beginning to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015 and achieving universal access to HIV prevention, support care and treatment.
Taking account of the lessons learnt in the global response to HIV, the latest scientific information on the varying patterns and trends of the epidemic and changes in global aid architecture since the previous strategy was launched in 2004, according to the Strategy Australia will deliver its international HIV development assistance by focusing on six priorities.
