Annual Conference and General Meeting of the International Association of Prosecutors
Kiev (Ukraine), 22 September 2009 - Representatives from the UNODC Regional Centre participated in the 14th Annual Conference and General Meeting of the International Association of Prosecutors the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) held in Kiev, Ukraine from 6-10th September. The theme of the conference was "Successful Prosecutions: Achieving just outcomes".
On this occasion, UNODC presented to the 350 participants from 77 countries and 7 international organizations the new sub-programme of the Criminal Justice pillar called "
Towards AsiaJust".
The genesis and general concept of the "Towards AsiaJust" programme were presented by Michel Bonnieu, UNODC Senior Legal advisor, and Joonmyung Lee, UNODC Senior International Law Enforcement Adviser, as the main drafters of the programme.
The conference sought to explore the diverse ways of achieving a successful resolution when a criminal offence has been committed, besides the traditional pursuit of conviction and punishment. It also aimed to examine how prosecutors can legitimately maximize the prospects of a successful outcome in TOC investigations.
This conference represented an opportunity to discuss future potential cooperation between UNODC and the IAP to jointly develop new activities in the framework of "Towards AsiaJust".
International Association of Prosecutors
The International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) is the only world wide association of Prosecutors and has been in existence now for over 13 years. It is a non-governmental, non-political organisation, and was established as a result of the rapid growth in transnational crime in June 1995 at the United Nations offices in Vienna with the support of the United Nations. It numbers at present 132 organisational members, and approximately 500 individual members. Consequently every region in the world is represented.
