Hanoi (Viet Nam), 18 December 2009 - On 3 and 4 December 2009, the Standing Office for Drug Control (SODC) of Viet Nam organized two workshops for border liaison offices with support provided by UNODC through its project entitled "Consolidation and Enhancement of the Border Liaison Mechanism".
The ceremony was opened by Pol. Lt. Col. Hoang Anh Tuyen, SODC Deputy Director, who - in the presence of 28 representatives of nine border liaison offices and SODC - thanked UNODC for its support in strengthening and expanding the network of border liaison offices.
"The Standing Office for Drug Control appreciates the long and continuous support from UNODC. Over many years of hard work through countless meetings, study tours and workshops, the border liaison office mechanism has grown and become an important instrument in our fight against drugs. We look to firmly establish this mechanism as part of our policy and continue to develop and strengthen the infrastructure to become even more efficient." said Pol. Lt. Col. Hoang Anh Tuyen.
The situation of the border liaison offices in Viet Nam is in line with that of other countries in the region, with weaknesses in terms of management and of human and financial resources. While there is great potential, strong leadership and management are needed to achieve important goals. Close monitoring and regular support will be needed to ensure sustainability for future activities.
This workshop was made possible through the coordinated efforts of staff of the UNODC Computer-Based Training Unit in Bangkok implementing the project entitled "Consolidation and Enhancement of the Border Liaison Mechanism" and the Standing Office for Drug Control. Since 1997, the Computer-Based Training Unit in Bangkok has coordinated the implementation of training courses in over 52 countries delivered from over 300 training centres worldwide.
