Computer-based training on intelligence for Vietnamese law enforcement

Bangkok (Thailand), 12 April 2010 - A computer-based training workshop on basic intelligence was organized for a delegation of training managers from Vietnamese law enforcement entities on 1 and 2 April 2010 at the training centre of the Office of Narcotics Control Board - ONCB of Thailand. This event was organized under the auspices of the UNODC project entitled - Strengthening drug law enforcement agency information collection and sharing procedures, in cooperation with the Computer-based Training Unit in Bangkok. This training session is part of a broader capacity-building programme to carry out training courses using basic intelligence for front-line Vietnamese officers in the fight against drugs and crime.

A total of 12 training managers were nominated from key departments of Viet Nam's law enforcement authorities: the Counter Narcotics Department of Police, the Anti Smuggling Department of Customs, the Surveillance Department of the Border Army and the Maritime Police.

The computer-based basic intelligence course comprised three training modules: introduction to intelligence, application of intelligence and the intelligence cycle.

In May 2010, three training centres will be set up in Viet Nam, in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Da Nang. These centres will be used to deliver the computer-based course on basic intelligence to law enforcers at national level, under the management and coordination of the training managers who have taken part in the workshop.

Since 1999, UNODC has been providing Member States with technical assistance to address a range of issues related to transnational organized crime through computer-based training. The existing UNODC curriculum contains 78 modules and is available in 18 languages. It is currently being delivered via 300 centres in 52 countries. More than 100 of these centres are in South-East Asia and the Pacific. In fact, UNODC started its computer-based training operations working out of its Regional Centre in Bangkok.
