Focus on combatting corruption in the private sector in Indonesia

Jakarta (Indonesia), 10 June 2016
- New strategies are being implemented by Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to involve the private sector in the prevention of corruption. To support KPK's efforts and combat transnational organized crime, UNODC and Alliance for Integrity delivered a one-day joint training on "Promoting Corporate Integrity" on 31 May 2016 in Jakarta.

Twenty-three KPK officials attended the workshop and received essential in-depth knowledge on measures to counter and prevent corruption in the private sector as well as insights on technical and regulatory issues.

Since ratifying the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) in 2006, Indonesia has made notable progress in the fight against corruption through the adoption and on-going implementation of UNCAC. These efforts have culminated in significant arrests and prosecutions of public officials for corruption. Despite these successes, however, eradicating corruption in Indonesia remains a huge challenge due to the systemic nature of corrupt practices embedded in various sectors, ranging - from acquiring permits to procurement.

"As one of the 178 States Parties to the UNCAC, Indonesia has pledged to take measures to prevent corruption involving the private sector and, where appropriate, provide penalties for failure to comply", said Mr. Collie Brown, UNODC Indonesia Country Manager while delivering his opening remarks.

The training was well received by the participants who emphasized the need for further capacity building on frameworks and measures to address corruption in and involving the private sector.

Mr. Francesco Checchi and Mr. Akharakit Keeratithanachaiyos from the UNODC Regional Office for Southeast Asia and Pacific (ROSEAP) gave presentations that focused on UNCAC and other relevant international frameworks for addressing corruption involving the private sector, and sanctions and Incentives to promote a culture of corporate integrity. Alliance for Integrity presented on internal and external measures to counter corruption in the private sector and good practices and lessons learned from AfIn's engagement in other countries.
