Nakhon Pathom (Thailand), 2 June 2023 – According to the Sustainable Development Goals, SDG 16 aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. Countering corruption is essential to achieving these goals, and many countries have highlighted the fight against corruption as a critical issue in their development.
As one of these countries, Thailand has demonstrated its commitment to SDG 16 by including anti-corruption measures in its 21st National Economic and Social Development Plan. This plan focuses on preventing corruption and unethical behaviour, engaging citizens in preventing and suppressing corruption, and promoting honesty and integrity. The plan also aims to instill these values and create a network to combat crime in all parts of society. In line with these commitments, Thailand’s Royal Police Cadet Academy (RPCA) collaborated with UNODC to organize a workshop to promote the role of police cadets in preventing and responding to corruption.
This activity took place on June 2, 2023 and gathered 320 police cadets and 4 instructors. This half-day workshop was designed, through collaboration between RPCA and UNODC, for the police cadets to understand their roles in responding to corruption. The workshop imparted the fundamental concepts of corruption and its effect on young people, corruption from an international perspective, youth engagement in preventing and combating corruption, as well as how can young people become actively and creatively involved in addressing corruption.
The participating police cadets will utilize the knowledge gained from this workshop in preparation for an essay competition with other cadet academies across Southeast Asia where they will be able to fully express their ideas in the fight against corruption.
This activity was funded by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Korea (KMOJ).
