Balikpapan (Indonesia), 21 July 2023 – In 2022, a series of Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) highlighted prevalent corruption risks within Indonesia’s land-based business sector, particularly regarding land conversion and obtaining permits. The governance system’s accountability mechanisms, including a lack of whistleblower protection, create significant opportunities for the occurrence of corruption. Recognizing the need for action, UNODC and the Indonesia Global Compact Network (IGCN) aimed to mobilize businesses and encourage the active involvement of all stakeholders to develop solutions that were perceived as more credible, acceptable, and sustainable.
To this end, UNODC, in collaboration with Indonesia Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and IGCN, hosted the “Workshop on Strengthening Integrity and Anti-corruption Collective Action” in East Kalimantan. This training followed a previous workshop held in Sorong (Indonesia) in June 2023 and aimed to strengthen integrity and prevent corruption in the private sector as mandated by Article 12 of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC). Participants of the workshop included mid to high-level managers from respected companies operating in the province, who shared corruption risks and mitigation strategies they identified in the land-based sector.
During the workshop, UNODC distributed a mini survey to measure the maturity level of the participating companies’ anti-corruption policies. The results showed that most of the respondents listed their daily processes & activities and the procurement of goods & services, as involving a moderate-to-high corruption risk. Furthermore, the workshop highlighted multiple anti-corruption strategies to promote stronger business ethics and codes of conduct. The participants were actively engaged in the discussion and had a high level of interest in learning and engaging in collective action against corruption.
This activity was funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).
