Bangladesh: UNODC builds curriculum on trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants to enhance police capacities

Dhaka, Bangladesh/ 24 January 2023: Under the framework of GLO.ACT-Bangladesh, UNODC partnered with the Police Staff College to organize a stakeholder workshop to facilitate curriculum development on trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants. A new UNODC library corner was also established at the Central Library of Police Staff College.

Over 50 officers from various Bangladesh Police agencies, including the Police Headquarters, Criminal Investigation Department, Police Bureau of Investigation, Rapid Action Battalion, and Police Staff College participated in the discussions. The workshop was opened by Mr. Marco Teixeira, UNODC Regional Representative for South Asia.

Inputs were also taken to revise an earlier UNODC training manual on trafficking in persons in Bangladesh, aligning it with the needs and priorities of investigating officers.

Participants welcomed the initiative and provided extensive feedback to assist the development of the curriculum and the revision of the training manual, looking at emerging trends and ways to prevent and counter the crime.

Building on the workshop, UNODC will roll out a two-week short course on trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants at the Police Staff College.

GLO.ACT-Bangladesh is a joint initiative by the European Union (EU) and UNODC being implemented in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and led by the Government of Bangladesh. The project works on developing evidence-based information on trafficking and smuggling patterns and trends, legislative review and harmonization, capability development of criminal justice actors, and international cooperation.
