Bhutan: Strengthening Public Outreach to combat Trafficking in Persons

                                                                                                                                                                                                               

Thimphu, Bhutan/ March 2018: Limited awareness and understanding of Trafficking in Persons was observed to be one of the key gaps by both the first assessment on the situation of Trafficking in Persons in Bhutan and the Legal and Policy review report.

Aiming  to address this, awareness camps were conducted in Bhutan's Chuukha and Samtse districts that border India in collaboration with the Department of Law & Order.

The awareness program reached out to 234 individuals from various occupational backgrounds such as hoteliers, employess of Drayangs(entertainment venues),taxi drivers , labour recruitment agencies. The camps also reached out to two schools and 860 students participated in program in these two districts.

The program featured discussions on the issue of trafficking in persons, relevant legal and policy instruments, case studies as well as the role of social media and ICT.
