Law enforcement officers receive computer-based training in Timor-Leste

- From 18 to 24 January the National Police of Timor-Leste, conducted its first computer-based training session on "First Responders to a Crime Scene" at Dili's computer-based training laboratory.

Timor-Leste is located east of the Indonesian archipelago and north-west of Australia. Contemporary Timor-Leste faces many challenges. Impoverishment, low standards of living and corruption are just some of the obstacles faced by many East Timorese.

UNODC specifically developed this interactive e-Learning programme, with the support of the Governments of Australia and the United States of America, for front-line law enforcement officers, in order to strengthen the capabilities of law enforcement agencies in the country.

The computer-based course is taught in Bahasa Indonesia, a designated working language of Timor-Leste. High quality pictures, voices, videos and animations are used to guide trainees through the lessons and to keep participants engaged throughout the course.


Mr. Carlos Geronimo, Commandant, Superintendent Chief of the National Police of Timor-Leste said that: "We are thankful for the opportunity to be the first to benefit from the new computer-based course on first responders to a crime scene. We are currently managing our annual recruitment for 2011 and see the computer-based training programme as an ideal tool to add knowledge to our young officers."


The computer-based course for "First Responders to a Crime Scene" covers a range of information and actions that a law enforcement officer should know when arriving at and responding to a crime scene. The training covers the different types of evidence and the importance of using a systematic process for the recognition, protection, recovery, analysis and use of evidence in court.

The course is comprised of three training modules, consisting of 5 hours of training. These modules are:
