Regional workshop on Behavioural Analysis and Lie Detection for law enforcement officers from South-Eastern Europe

31 January-3 February 2023, Belgrade, Serbia: UNODC organized a regional workshop on behavioural analysis and lie detection for 25 frontline law enforcement officers of the joint AIRCOP/CCP inter-agency units in Bosnia Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Serbia. The workshop included sessions on mechanisms of memory, introductory aspects of neuroscience, information recovery, verbal and non-verbal communication, facial micro-expressions, cognitive/investigative interview as well as lie detection and indicators.

The participants had the opportunity to learn and understand the foundations of behavioural analysis process and to develop observation and communication techniques, verbal and non-verbal, enhancing their behavioural assessment capacities during the submission of real case studies. The workshop also focused on the development of interviewing and interrogation techniques aimed at boosting the quantity and quality of retrievable information during their daily activity at the airports against subjects involved in illicit trafficking at the air borders.

The workshop was held within the framework of the joint EU-UNODC action on promoting the rule of law and good governance through targeted border control measures at ports and airports implemented by UNODC-WCO-INTERPOL Airport Communications Project (AIRCOP) and the UNODC-WCO Container Control Programme (CCP) in cooperation with the UNODC Regional Programme for South Eastern Europe and generously funded by the European Union.

This activity contributes to SDG 16, particularly SDG 16.a on strengthening relevant national institutions, including through international cooperation, for building capacity at all levels, in particular in developing countries, to prevent violence and combat terrorism and crime.
