The online side event was organized by the Secretariat to the Governing Bodies of UNODC and co-organized by the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations in New York.
Moderated by Delphine Schantz, Representative of the New York Liaison Office of UNODC, the side event examined the impact of COVID-19 on the world drug problem and crime prevention and criminal justice, and presented measures undertaken by the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) and the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) to Build Back Better.
The Chair of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice at its thirty-first session, Ambassador Takeshi Hikihara, presented the work and progress of the CCPCJ while recalling the importance of strengthening the global partnership to advance crime prevention and criminal justice, counter the effects of the COVID-19 in this field, and achieve the 2030 Agenda.
The latest contributions and initiatives of the CND were then introduced by Ambassador Ghislain D’Hoop, Chair of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs at its sixty-fifth session, and effective measures were explored to counter the impact of the pandemic on the world drug problem. In his intervention, he emphasized that addressing the world drug problem matters to Build Back Better, as access to effective and humane drug use treatment is a key aspect of promoting health and wellbeing worldwide.
