Thai Princess Becomes UNODC Goodwill Ambassador on the Rule of Law for Southeast Asia
UNODC appointed Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand as GWA on the Rule of Law for Southeast Asia to raise the profile of development efforts that address the impact of crime on society, and that contribute to justice reform. HRH Princess Mahidol has supported UNODC over recent years, increasing visibility and mobilizing partnerships, and promoting the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda.[Read more]
'Science has no gender': UNODC marks global day of women and girls in science
Science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Afghanistan: UNODC launches first synthetic drugs assessment in the country
Recently, UNODC launched the first Afghanistan Synthetic Drugs Assessment report. The survey draws attention to the presence of synthetic drugs in Afghanistan alongside the continued dominant presence of an illicit opiate market. The main objective of this report is to offer some initial insights into the extent of synthetic drug production, use, and trafficking in Afghanistan and to highlight important areas for further research. UNODC and IOC: Strengthening integrity and good governance in sport
UNODC is committed to supporting initiatives to promote integrity and good governance in sport, and to help safeguard major sporting events against corruption, UNODC's Executive Director, Yury Fedotov, told those taking part in the 2nd International Forum for Sport Integrity (IFSI), organized and hosted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Innovative platform shows how the work of NGOs is making an impact on the ground
The NGO "Marketplace" is a joint UNODC and Vienna NGO Committee (VNGOC) project, officially launched on the margins of UNGASS 2016. Some of the main benefits of the NGO "Marketplace" include more efficient communication and networking of NGOs globally, as well as helping UNODC, Member States, and other stakeholders in the implementation of the UNGASS outcome document, and show how the work of NGOs is making an impact on the ground. Southeast Asia: civil society and governments join forces against corruption
Accelerating the implementation of the UNCAC in Southeast Asia was the focus of a recent conference organized by UNODC and supported by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom, in Bangkok, Thailand. The regional conference provided an opportunity to create and foster partnerships, and to establish a regional platform to fast-track implementation of UNCAC in support of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Kinshasa Convention on arms control to enter into force on 8 March
The Central African Convention for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, their Ammunition and all Parts and Components that can be used for their Manufacture, Repair and Assembly, also known as the Kinshasa Convention, was adopted in 2010 by eleven signatories. Recently, the conditions for the entry into force of the instrument were met, after its ratification by Angola. The Convention will enter into force on 8 March 2017. [Read more]
Education as a tool to preventing crime and promoting a culture of lawfulness
UNODC's 'Education for Justice' (E4J) initiative is built around the idea that long-term approaches to countering crime and violence can only be achieved through the integration of crime prevention and criminal justice into all levels of education. Part of the Doha Declaration Global Programme, the initiative is currently hosting a series of Expert Group Meetings with leaders from primary, secondary and tertiary levels. [Read more]
UNODC provides Nelson Mandela Rules guidance to States to improve prison management
Following the development of guidance material on the management of violent extremist prisoners and on prison-based rehabilitation programmes, UNODC's Justice Section hosted more than 30 senior level prison officials from around the world, together with representatives from prison inspection mechanisms and other relevant partners, in order to review a checklist which will assist Member States in assessing compliance with "The Nelson Mandela Rules". Bolivia and UNODC sign strategic partnership framework 2016-2020
UNODC's Deputy Executive Director, Aldo Lale-Demoz, arrived in Bolivia to sign the Country Programme and conduct a series of high-level meetings with government authorities and the international community. The Country Programme was developed through an extensive dialogue process between the government of Bolivia and UNODC. [Read more]
Kyrgyzstan: UNODC, Government unveil new centre to strengthen forensic services
The newly-constructed building for the State Forensics Centre under the Ministry of Justice, established with the assistance of UNODC, was officially inaugurated in Bishkek in recent weeks. The Centre is the main provider of forensic services in the Kyrgyz Republic, handling 80 percent of all cases requiring forensic evidence. Until today, the Centre was located in a dilapidated building dating back to the 1940s. [Read more]
UNODC helps tackle bitcoin banking fraud and money laundering
In recent weeks, UNODC and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe trained law enforcement, anti-money laundering, and bank supervision agencies on how to investigate money laundering with bitcoins, combat banking fraud and disrupt illicit financial flows, in Chisinau, Moldova.
