UNODC and IOM launch new initiative to counter migrant smuggling
Two UN agencies are joining forces to combat migrant smuggling. IOM and UNODC recently organized an event at the UN in Vienna centring on a Joint Platform on Countering Migrant Smuggling. Opening the event, UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov said: "We must work together to deny criminals the means and opportunity, to protect the lives and safety of people, and end the impunity of smugglers." East Africa: UNODC organizes anti-corruption conference on whistleblower protection, public procurement
Further steps were taken towards the creation of a regional forum on anti-corruption in public procurement for Eastern Africa as 35 governmental representatives and civil society organizations recently gathered in Arusha, Tanzania to discuss public procurement and whistleblower protection. Consensus key to advancing balanced action on drugs, says UNODC Executive Director
Yury Fedotov, UNODC Executive Director, highlighted the importance of consensus in addressing world drug challenges at the conclusion of the 61st session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), which took place in Vienna. UNODC Laboratory Chief: supply reduction, capacity building and multilateral action key to address opioid crisis
Drug abuse and addiction continue to be a public health, developmental and security challenge in both industrialized and developing countries. Among growing concerns is the opioid crisis as recent years have seen a sharp rise in related overdose deaths, mainly in North America and, to a certain extent, in Europe. "Efforts must focus on early warning systems, prevention by risk communication, legislative responses, capacity building and supply reduction," Chief of the UNODC Laboratory and Scientific Section said. Mali is facing a unique combination of threats associated with various kinds of illicit trafficking and terrorism. On World Wildlife Day, UN joins call for protection of planet's big cats
Big cats, the planet's most majestic predators, are under increasing threat - mostly caused by human activities - and on the 2018 World Wildlife Day the United Nations joined the world in raising awareness to their plight and galvanizing support for the many actions already under way to safe these iconic species. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said: "the spotlight falls on the world's big cats," which include species such as cheetahs, pumas and snow leopards, found from Africa to Asia and the Americas.
