UNODC-WCO Container Control Programme reports record high cocaine seizures in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Every year, more than 720 million containers move around the globe by sea, transporting 90 per cent of the world's cargo. Most carry licit goods, but some are being used to smuggle drugs, weapons, and other illicit goods. Amid threats posed by transnational organized crime, UNODC and WCO, through the Container Control Programme, seek to detect and disrupt the flow of illicitly trafficked goods, while facilitating legitimate trade and raising state revenues.[Read More]
UNODC, Internet Watch Foundation team up to tackle online child sexual abuse imagery
Belize has become the most recent member to join the Internet Watch Foundation's (IWF) growing global Portals network by adopting a technical reporting solution for online child sexual abuse imagery. The Portal, supported by UNODC, will enable the public to report suspected illegal content anonymously.[Read More]
Keep Running: Chinese celebrities supporting the Sustainable Development Goals
Seven leading Chinese celebrities, including actors, singers, film directors, a fashion model and a racing driver gave their support to the Sustainable Development Goals after a visit to the United Nations in Vienna. West and Central Asia: UNODC holds regional workshop to counter illicit financial flows
Illicit financial flows make national borders increasingly irrelevant. Funds are moved across jurisdictions with a click of a button as technological developments make these transactions easier, faster and difficult to trace. With a view to countering illicit financial flows, UNODC and EU-Act organized a workshop on "Financial Disruption of Illicit Financial Flows Associated with Transnational Organized Crime" in Kazakhstan. At UNHQ in NY, UNODC supports efforts to harness sport as a force for crime prevention
"With the UN General Assembly special session consensus as our blueprint, we can promote efforts to stop organized crime while protecting human rights, enabling development and ensuring rights-based treatment and support," Secretary-General António Guterres said in a video message at the opening session of the 61st Commission on Narcotic Drugs. Chief Justices and senior judges launch UNODC's Global Judicial Integrity Network
After two years of planning, seven regional preparatory meetings, and consultations with approximately 4,000 judges, UNODC launched its Global Judicial Integrity Network, in the presence of Chief Justices, senior judges and judicial professionals from around the world. The two-day launch event gave over 350 attendants the opportunity to discuss key topics with peers from other Member States. [Read More]
UNODC launches new counter-terrorism programme in Iraq
In recent years Iraq has been a target of several terrorist groups and militants who carried out numerous attacks. With the rise of terrorism threats in Iraq, UNODC has multiplied its efforts in providing legal, capacity building and technical assistance to the Government. In this regard, UNODC's Terrorism Prevention Branch launched a two-year programme on "Lessons learned from Iraq's counter-terrorism efforts and response to future challenges: Iraq after ISIL/Da'esh".[Read More]
First West African university course on addiction launched with UNODC support
In Africa, the use of drugs, including cocaine, opioids, amphetamine-type stimulants and new psychoactive substances, has increased, according to the 2017 report of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB). At the global level, only one out of six people in need of drug dependence treatment has access to treatment programmes while this figure in Africa is only one out of 18. [Read More]

Jamaica joins UNODC's Blue Heart Campaign to end human trafficking
Jamaica has become the first Caribbean nation to join the Blue Heart Campaign against Human Trafficking, an international awareness-raising initiative by UNODC to encourage involvement and action to help prevent this crime.The Government of Jamaica, in partnership with UNODC and with the assistance of Airline Ambassadors International (AAI), launched the Campaign on 28 March.[Read More]
