16 June 2009 - At the fifty-second session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, held in Vienna from 11 to 20 March 2009, Heads of States adopted the
Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem. This was agreed at a high-level segment to review progress made on drug control since the twentieth special session of the General Assembly took place in 1998.
In the Political Declaration, Member States of the United Nations vowed to tackle the world drug problem and actively promote a society free of drug abuse in order to ensure that all people can live in health, dignity and peace, with security and prosperity.
