World AIDS Day commemorated across the world

Vienna, 1 December 2010 the 22nd anniversary of World AIDS Day. The theme for this year is "Universal Access and Human Rights". Commemorating World AIDS Day, a red ribbon illuminated the building of the UNODC office in Vienna to remember those lost to AIDS and to emphasize the importance of human rights for people living with HIV and people at risk of infection.

World AIDS Day in Azerbaijan

The conference "HIV in prisons" was organized jointly by UNODC and Ombudsmen Office in Azerbaijan on 1 December. The event was attended by members of Parliament, Ombudsman office, representatives from Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Education, and international organizations GFATM, OSI as well as local NGOs working with prisoners, people who use drugs and people living with AIDS.

In Bangkok, World AIDS Day activities started on 28 November with a campaign led by the Thailand Business Coalition on AIDS and the Ministry of Public Health. The United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), UNODC and other co-sponsors joined the campaign which was launched in Jatujak park.

UNAIDS tribute to President Lula and new campaign mark World AIDS Day in Brazil

Brasil, December 1, 2010 - More difficult than living with HIV / AIDS is having to cope with prejudice. This is the theme of the campaign against AIDS this year in Brazil, launched today at the Palace of the Chancellery, in commemoration of World AIDS Day. During the ceremony, President Lula da Silva was awarded the "UNAIDS Award for Leadership", prize given in recognition of his contribution to economic and social development and the response to AIDS. The award also recognizes the role of President Lula da Silva in the construction of social justice through poverty alleviation and acceleration of the country's progress in meeting the Millennium Development Goals.

World AIDS Day in Mizoram India

Several activities were organized at the female ward, Central jail, Mizoram to mark the World AIDS Day. Based on the theme for World AIDS Day 2010 'Universal Access and Human Rights', participants received accurate information about the fundamental rights of every citizen of the country and how violations against human rights could fuel the spread of HIV, putting marginalized groups, such as injecting drug users and sex workers, at a higher risk of HIV infection. By promoting individual human rights, new infections can be prevented and people who have HIV can live free from discrimination.

North-East India: HIV and AIDS prevention in prisons takes a significant stride
|
|
7 December 2010 - The Government of Manipur, one of the eight North-Eastern States of India, joined the international community in the World AIDS Day celebrations on 1st December, by rolling out the State's first comprehensive HIV prevention, care and support programme at the Sajiwa Central Prison.

World AIDS Day commemorated by Namibian Correctional Service

|
Namibia commemorated World AIDS day under the theme "Addressing stigma and discrimination to prevent new infections". The Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) organized events in all thirteen prisons, with the distribution of T-shirts, posters, banners and playing cards carrying information, education and communication (IEC) messages on HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. The IEC materials targeted both inmates and corrections Officers, and were developed with technical and financial support from UNODC .

World AIDS day events were organized by Indus Welfare Foundation Mianwali in close collaboration with UNODC and Community Development Unit Commissionerate for Afghan refugees KPK. The events were attended by Afghan community elders, members of the grand Shura of the Afghan refugee camp, youth, teachers and religious leaders in the Refugee camp, staff of Non Government organizations Dost Foundation and BEFARE, staff of PDH Afghan commissionerate, activists and social workers, Refugee village district administrator and local community. |

World AIDS Day celebrated in the Afghan Refugees camp Islamabad, Pakistan

Hashoo Foundation in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime organized a program to create awareness on HIV/AIDS among the Afghan refugees. The event is part of the project "Health Education and Skills development for Afghan Refugees"in Sector I-12 Ismalabad.The participants received information about HIV/AIDS modes of transmision, preventive measures and available treatment.

Nepal: Making a creative connection with HIV/AIDS

10 February 2010 - On 1 December 2010, celebrated globally as World AIDS Day, a unique painting exhibition was inaugurated in Kathmandu, Nepal. Titled 'Expression of Repression', the exhibition had an important task to do - to give the viewers a deep insight into the world of people living with HIV/AIDS through colour and visual imagery.
"Many organizations are working on the issue of HIV/AIDS. Still, the issue is not really understood by people", says Sohan Babu Khatri, a management consultant and a self-taught artist from Nepal. "The real causes of the problem are not known.
