Senior law enforcement officers from Southeast Asia gathered in Bangkok this week to map out responses to cases of trafficking in persons and the smuggling of migrants, under the stewardship of UNODC. Organised by the UNODC Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, the workshop aimed to strengthen regional law enforcement collaboration at the operational level.

El Salvador is the latest country to join the Blue Heart Campaign against Human Trafficking. Launched by the Government of El Salvador and the UNODC's Office for Central America and the Caribbean, the campaign aims to mobilize governments, civil society organizations, media and the private sector to expose and combat this serious crime.

Addressing human trafficking can be very difficult and complicated. The lack of uniform legislation in West and Central Asia and weak cooperation among stakeholders makes the prosecution of crimes and the protection of victims even more challenging.

UNODC has been actively engaged in the global compact on migration preparatory process to date, and most recently in October, participated in the second multi-stakeholder hearing in Geneva. The forum provided an opportunity to hear the views of a broader group of stakeholders, including Governments, businesses, academic institutions, regional organizations and civil society.

The Mediterranean is on the frontline of numerous urgent threats faced by the international community, UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov said today. "This includes the targeting of migrants and refugees by organized criminal smugglers and human traffickers," he stated. Mr. Fedotov was speaking at the high-level political segment of an OSCE conference.

With tens of millions of human trafficking victims worldwide, "now is the time to stand together and stamp out this abominable practice," Secretary-General António Guterres today told a high-level meeting at which Member States adopted a political Declaration reaffirming their commitment to implement a United Nations action plan to end the scourge.
