On the 9 October 2014, 18 NGO Representatives from 13 countries participated in a one-day Workshop on the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) and its Review Mechanism, organized by UNODC and the UNCAC Coalition with the contribution of AusAID.

The diversity of the NGOs' areas of expertise allowed for a high level of interaction during the sessions on the challenges posed by corruption in their respective sectors, such as environmental crime, human trafficking and child protection.
For example, participants shared their experiences on the issues of accountability of public officials and independency of the judicial system. The need for better access to information and the links between corruption and smuggling migrants were discussed, as well.
As a result, participants gained insight on the UNCAC provisions, stages of the review process, entry points of NGOs to contribute to the UNCAC review process, and were provided with networking and collaboration opportunities.
This event was an opportunity to mainstream anti-corruption efforts and activities within sustainable development programs and in the fight against transnational organized crimes. The workshop also proved that progress toward a more holistic approach in dealing with UNODC mandates from the civil society perspective is not only needed and possible, but also favored by the concerned actors.
