UNODC Appoints New Chief, Terrorism Branch

VIENNA, 5 May (United Nations Information Service) -- The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has appointed Jean-Paul Laborde of France as Chief, Terrorism Prevention Branch. This Branch is essentially responsible for providing legal technical assistance to Member States in order to combat terrorism.

Mr. Laborde began his United Nations career in 1994 as Senior Interregional Adviser with the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme. Subsequently, he was assigned as Chief, Conventions and Legal Affairs Section, Centre for International Crime Prevention (CICP). Prior to joining the Organization, Mr. Laborde was a member of the French judiciary. His previous work experience includes an appointment as a judge, as well as serving as Chief, National Inspection, Penitentiary Services, and as Assistant Prosecutor General.

Mr. Laborde has a post-graduate degree in International Development, a Master's degree in Law and a degree in Judicial Sciences. He was a member of the Bar Association of the Toulouse Court of Appeal. He was also Deputy Secretary-General, International Association of Penal Law.

Mr. Laborde is married, with three children.
