Director General/Executive Director
Nairobi, 29 August 2016
Social stability for shared prosperity requires a firm foundation based on justice, the rule of law and accountable institutions.
This is recognized by the SDGs and the African Union's Agenda 2063, as well as by the TICAD Yokohama Plan of Action and Nairobi Declaration.
TICAD is an opportunity to advance efforts to build and strengthen this foundation for Africa.
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime is supporting governments through comprehensive, integrated and gender-sensitive strategies to promote security and the rule of law, and support the pursuit of inclusive and sustainable prosperity.
Across the continent, we are helping to build robust criminal justice responses to terrorism; corruption and money laundering; asset recovery; wildlife and forest crime; maritime crime; trafficking in persons and migrant smuggling; illicit trafficking of drugs and firearms; and all other forms of organized crime.
UNODC is working in both conflict and post-conflict settings as part of UN system efforts. In the Sahel, our work is fully integrated in MINUSMA, an arrangement that is being replicated in other peacekeeping missions.
We have a strong track record in promoting regional cooperation, including through networks to address terrorism, corruption and asset recovery, and organized crime.
And we look forward to further strengthening these efforts with you, including through TICAD and the implementation of the Nairobi Declaration.
In conclusion, I would like to thank our partners here today, and, in particular, the government of Japan for their continued support to development in Africa.
Thank you.
