UNODC's Executive Director, Yury Fedotov, took part and delivered a keynote speech at the XV Meeting of the Heads of Special Services, Security and Law Enforcement Agencies, organized by the Russian Federation and held in Saint-Petersburg on 27 and 28 July 2016.
The event was attended by 100 delegations from 63 countries and 4 intergovernmental organizations - the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Commonwealth of Independent States, and the European Union.
The meeting was mainly dedicated to countering foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs). Forum participants reaffirmed the need to enhance practical cooperation and the exchange of information in relation to FTFs.
In his speech, Mr Fedotov referred to terrorism and violent extremism as the major threat to peace and security that the international community is facing now, and briefed participants on several initiatives UNODC is currently working on to tackle the phenomenon.
