The Expert Group Meeting, organized by the UNODC Terrorism Prevention Branch (UNODC/TPB) in collaboration with project donor, the University of Sussex (United Kingdom), took place in Vienna on 1-2 December 2016. The meeting was attended by senior officials from Afghanistan representing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Office of the Attorney General, Ministry of Justice and the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission.
Under this project, an Overview Paper addressing the international framework and good practices for supporting and protecting victims of acts of terrorism during criminal proceedings in Afghanistan was discussed by participants. The sessions, jointly led by experts from UNODC/TPB and the University of Sussex, culminated in the adoption of a Good Practices Report.
This Report aims to strengthen national good practices concerning victimology measures during criminal proceedings involving acts of terrorism. It will serve as a resource and guidance tool, providing practical advice to policymakers, law enforcement officials and criminal justice practitioners.
Throughout the meeting, delegates expressed their satisfaction with the discussions held during the two-day meeting, and their desire for UNODC/TPB to continue implementing specialized technical assistance aimed at strengthening the capacity of law enforcement, criminal justice officials, and other counter-terrorism practitioners at the national level.
