Under the Project on Strengthening the Legal Regime Against Terrorism in Jordan, the UNODC Terrorism Prevention Branch (UNODC/TPB) organized a national training on "Transport-related (Civil Aviation and Maritime) Terrorism Offences, Including Targeting Tourism and Touristic Sites" in Amman, Jordan, from 25-27 October 2016, with the generous funding by the Government of Japan.
The session provided participants with a forum to discuss specialized topics on transport-related terrorism offences, including the provisions of eight internationalinstruments related to civil aviation and the four treaties addressing safety of maritime navigation and fixed platforms. The event was particularly relevant in view of recently adopted Security Council resolution 2309 (2016) on civil aviation.
The event enhanced the capacity of approximately 30 law enforcement and criminal justice officials, such as police officers, investigators, prosecutors, judges and policy makers, involved with the prevention, investigation, prosecution and adjudication of related offences. Experts from UNODC/TPB, ICAO and INTERPOL, were joined by representatives from Egypt, Lebanon, the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences of the New Haven University, who identified practical challenges and shared good practices in the context of international human rights standards and the rule of law.
Participants expressed their satisfaction with the training and their wish for UNODC/TPB to continue implementing specialized technical assistance activities, aimed at strengthening the capacity of law enforcement, criminal justice officials and other counter-terrorism practitioners, at the national level.
