As part of the ongoing project to strengthen the legal regime against terrorism in Algeria, the UNODC Terrorism Prevention Branch (UNODC/TPB) organized a train-the-trainers workshop on strengthening international cooperation in criminal matters against complex cross-border terrorist cases, that was held in Algiers from 18 to 20 July 2016.
Around 35 Algerian judges and prosecutors from across the country participated in this first train-the trainers activity carried out in close cooperation with the Algerian School of Magistrates. The opening ceremony started with welcoming speeches from the Ambassador of Japan, a representative from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UNODC. The workshop focused, through technical discussions, on current challenges and good practices related to international cooperation in criminal matters against terrorism, especially in the context of cross-border investigation and prosecution of terrorist offences.
Algerian participants discussed in-depth with senior international experts from France, Spain, Tunisia and the African Union national experiences and good practices focusing on the establishment and the role of central authorities, the creation and work of joint investigation teams, challenges in partnering with countries of different legal systems and difficulties in cooperation in the Maghreb and Sahel regions.
The workshop took place at the premises of the Algerian School of Magistrates within the framework of the Plan of Action between the Government of Algeria and UNODC/TPB, the activities under which are generously funded by the Government of Japan.
