Violent extremism remains a persistent and growing threat to peace, security and development across West Africa. In particular, the Sahel region continues to face a surge of attacks carried out by terrorist and organized armed groups, including the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) and the Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM). In Niger, the challenges posed by radicalisation and violent extremism continue to threaten social cohesion, security and sustainable development. In response, the Government of Niger has developed a National Strategy for the Prevention and Countering of Violent Extremism (SNPREV). To support the operationalisation of this strategy, UNODC organized a national workshop in Niamey on 16-18 April 2025.
