UNODC has a country office established in Burkina Faso since 2019 and implements a wide range of activities in coordination with national authorities, UN system agencies and partners, aimed at combating corruption and smuggling in general, building capacity to fight migrant smuggling and trafficking in persons and preventing terrorism.

OUR WORK

JUSTICE

In the prison environment, the Sahel Program supports countries in the areas of:
- The prevention of radicalization.
- Reduction of the number of prisoners awaiting trial.
- Technical assistance for the justice of minors associated with armed terrorist groups.
- Processing of terrorism cases.
- Capacity building of prison staff.
UNODC also facilitates Chad's participation in the Sahelian Platform for Judicial Cooperation (SPJC), which strengthens judicial cooperation in the Sahel region.

CORRUPTION

UNODC supports national authorities to fight corruption more effectively through the implementation of the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), including through legislative, policy and institutional assistance, as well as by raising awareness of anti-corruption issues among citizens and civil society. Following the UNODC's request for assistance in implementing the Convention, workshops were held to adopt a roadmap for the implementation of the UNCAC, and training was provided on the review mechanism and international cooperation.

COMBATING NATURAL RESOURCE CRIME

UNODC is committed to the protection of the environment and the rule of law in Chad through the regional project to strengthen the capacity of law enforcement, prosecutors, and the judiciary and cooperation among ECCAS member states to combat wildlife crime and illicit trafficking in natural resources. UNODC is also implementing a Chad-Cameroon cross-border project to train youth in the principles of peace and cooperation between border communities, raise awareness on transnational organized crime, and identify alternative income-generating activities.

G5 SAHEL

As the first partner of the G5 Sahel, UNODC supports the Police Component of the G5 Sahel Joint Force, the Security Cooperation Platform and the G5 Sahel Gender Office. UNODC also supports Cellrad in the prevention of violent extremism and facilitates the design of security-development projects in partnership with UN agencies. In Chad, the Sahel program supports the development of the Regional Police Academy. UNODC is helping to establish its statutes and continues its support for the recruitment mechanism.

TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS AND SMUGGLING OF MIGRANTS

UNODC builds the capacity of governments and civil society to identify and combat trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants by targeting criminals, while effectively protecting and assisting victims of trafficking and irregular migrants. UNODC's PROMIS project aims to strengthen the capacity of States to develop a human rights-based response to migrant smuggling and to respond effectively to human rights violations related to irregular migration. Phase III of the project expands the geographical coverage of this project to Chad.
